Contemplative PrC prerequistes: a bug?

Ukyo the undead

To qualify to become a contemplative, a character must
fulfill all the following criteria.
Knowledge (religion): 13 ranks."

Knowledge religion 13 ranks???? It means I have to be level 12 to take this PrC! Is this right?

I dont think it´s very balanced to a 10 levels PrC.

Any thoughts? Any errata?

No, it works. You can be a level 10 cleric, for instance, and have 13 ranks in Knowledge (Religion).

The max number of ranks in a class skill is something like the class level + 3 (this of course is skewed a little if it's a cross-class skill or if you are multi-classing).

Check out the section on skills, it is in that chapter before the description of the skills themselves.

(don't have any books handy right now to give an exact reference)

Just a minor clarification: multi-classing in no way affects the max ranks you can have in a skill. Once it becomes a class skill for any class you have, it has a new max of Character Level + 3 ranks. Of course, if purchasing it when advancing in a class that does not have it as a class skill (such as a cleric / rogue buying Knowledge (religion) you have to pay 2 skill points per rank.

Can you spend 2 skill points on the same cross-class skill (to get 1 rank) when you gain a level? In short, could a 10th-level fighter have 13 ranks in Spot by spending 26 skill points? Or would they max out at 6 ranks and spend only 13 skill points?

Yes; no; yes.

Not if the cross-class skill was maxed out before you gained a level.

No. But a 9th level fighter/1st level rogue could have 13 ranks in Spot.

Or would they max out at 6 ranks and spend only 13 skill points?

Yes, although the fighter would have 6.5 ranks.
