This might be dependent upon the order of narration, what the group understands the narration to be doing and the scope of the narration. I think there’s a few important things going on. Let’s say I roll and choose the following: 1) I don’t achieve Halden’s primary goal (Get the Lotus) 2) I don’t achieve Halden’s secondary goal (Give Ansillia space to retreat) 3) Drenem is wounded badly 4) Halden is unwounded. If we start with ‘are you friends hurt?’ We know that the answer is yes and so the GM has first say. GM: Drenem is fighting valiantly but one Ahasi warrior skewers him through the leg. Then we move to the secondary objective: Ansillia doesn’t get away. I have first say: Player: Seeing Drenem skewered, the severity of the cost he’s paying hits home. I can no longer in good conscience let Ansillia (and the Lotus?) go, I position myself between her and the exit. I also fail to achieve the primary goal as well. I get first say: Player: Ansillia, cornered, takes the Lotus and throws it over me to a waiting Ahasi warrior. I have the chance to stop her, to plunge my sword though her but I can’t do it. The Ahasi warrior snatches up the Lotus and flees. The above is weak sauce because the thematic decisions are post-hoc. I don’t think it’s necessarily the systems fault but how you frame the decisions and whether there is actually a conflict. Take a different but similar system, the type of thing that eventually becomes AW. 1) Drenem is trying to bash Ansillia’s head in. 2) The skeletons are trying to murder Drenem. 3) Ansillia is trying to get the Lotus away by throwing it to a skeleton so it can make off. BUT You are quick and skilled and mighty (how quick and skilled and mighty?) Roll and on a 10 choose 2, on a 7-9 choose 2, on a 6 choose 1. You stop Drenem. You capture the Lotus You stop the skeletons So say you roll a 6: You hesitate, you’re not going to be quick enough, which one does Halden choose? And so on. The post roll narration is then just color and you’re not making big post-hoc decisions. Say you get a 10: I run forward and push Halden out the way, stopping the Skeletons from stabbing him from behind AND stopping him from wrapping his mace around Ansillia’s head. As Ansillia tries to throw the Lotus, I leap up and snatch it out of the air. Or. I roll a 7-9: I run up and push Halden out the way but I’ve left t a little late and Ansillia throws the Lotus to a skeleton which subsequently flees.
