Controller Mechanic

Defender - Marking opponents forcing them to attack the defender or suffer
Strikers - Bonus damage die under certain conditions (edit for Remathilis - or flat out bonus damage)
Leaders - Minor Action healing powers

Controllers, however, are a combat role without a clear mechanic associated with them. This role needs a mechanic like the other three roles to bring better definition to their purpose on the battlefield. Some simple free or minor action ability needs to be provided these classes, for example:

Wizard's Will
  • Heroic: Minor Action - Slide a target 3 squares
  • Paragon: Minor Action - Slide one target 5 squares or two targets 3 squares
  • Epic: Minor Action - Slide one target 7 squares, two targets 5 squares, or three targets 3 squares

Nature's Obstruction (druid)
Creates a wall of natural objects weakly held together. Any damage done to it causes that section of wall to crumble into difficult terrain. The wall and difficult terrain last until the end of the encounter or 5 minutes.
  • Heroic: Minor Action - Create a contiguous wall 5 squares long
  • Paragon: Minor Action - 8 squares long
  • Epic: Minor Action - 12 squares long

Both powers build upon the controllers role (manipulating the battlefield) without interfering with the mechanics of the other three roles.

What mechanic would you like to see the controller class pick up?

I don't think it needs anything.

I also don't think that the other roles should be overly married to their trademark abilities.

I think that roles are emergent properties. If someone comes up with a way for a class to, say, fulfill a defender role without a single marking power, then great. Same with the rest of them.

While true of the PHB strikers (Warlock, Rogue, Ranger), it appears NOT to be true of the PHB2 strikers (sorcerer, avenger, barbarian). These three seem to be defined as [w] + primary stat + secondary stat damage.

Didn't mean to throw a monkey wrench in your idea. So far, only leaders and their ___ word power and defenders with their mark seem to be following the pattern...

Okay, it may not be a bonus die, but it still bonus damage based off a condition (in this case, the condition is a [W] attack ).

The Avenger's main striker mechanic is not to add extra damage per se (though they do in some instances), but instead increase the overall accurracy of its attacks.
