There's a bit of a contradiction in the Lankhmar - City of Adventure (1993) version that says "They seem never to need food or other nourishment" while having "DIET: Carnivore" in the stats. We'll have to pick one or the other, but I'm leaning towards them not needing to eat. How's this:
Gladiator lizards are hideous reptilian monstrosities that inhabit lifeless rocky areas, particularly beaches on desert islands. They appear to have magical or alien origins and do not need to eat or sleep (although they can do so when they wish or if something forces them to). Gladiator lizards are murderously territorial and seek to kill anything that approaches them. They devour their victims' bodies despite never needing food. Gladiator lizards are usually encountered in psychically linked pairs called brood mates. Most brood mates formed a mental link before they were born, but two solitary lizards will become brood mates if they stay together long enough. Every five or six years, one of the brood mates lays a clutch of one and four eggs. The largest nesting sites can have scores of fully mature eggs. Newly laid gladiator lizard eggs look like stones the size of a large lemon. The eggs slowly grow until they become boulders taller than a human, each containing a full sized gladiator lizard ready to fight and kill the instant it hatches. It is likely gladiator lizard eggs develop by leeching vitality from their surroundings, which would explain why gladiator lizard always nest in lifeless areas. A gladiator lizard takes at least two years to reach full size but can enter a state of hibernation and remain dormant in its egg for decades. Full sized eggs are occasionally sold to wealthy folk who want a guardian monster or menagerie curiosity. Gladiator lizards are utterly untamable, so owners must have some way to control or restrain the creatures to safely access something they're guarding. Gladiator lizards have some connection to a small pale man that approaches people with strong life force and curse them to travel to a gladiator lizard's nest. This mysterious being appears solid but is actually an immaterial spirit that can vanish in an instant and is immune to all physical effects. See the Bleak One entry for details. A gladiator lizard stands 8 feet tall and weighs about 600 pounds. Gladiator lizards have their own language, a mixture of screeches and whistles.
