What kind/brand of software do I need to convert my .dat VCDs to an editing format usable on a Windows 98/XP system?

As best I can figure from a quick look on Yahoo, Google, and Wikipedia, the .dat files are just MPEG-1 files that have been renamed with a .dat extension. If you rename it to a .mpg extension, you could probably edit with most any editing program.
