Cool high-level items?

What do you guys think are the coolest and/or most useful items for a high-level character to have? I'm not talking about the items that add to numbers (+stat, +save, weapons, armor, etc.), but the more interesting stuff.

Tuning Forks (focus for Plane Shift) for useful Planes:
- Sigil
- Mount Celestia / Arboria
- The Abyss / 9 Hells
- A nice, private demi-plane

Enchanted scale from a gold dragon which allows the PC to call on that dragon's favor -- once (modified Word of Recall cast by the dragon, using a scale in place of a gem).

A Portable Hole or two.

An Iron Flask.

Several Flying Carpets of all shapes & styles are cool.

Many people get utility from various Wonderous Figurines.

There are many:

"Instaheres" Devices which allow PCs to rapidly move from here to there, without needing to spend long periods travelling. If you don't like them being used as "escape hatches", then require set-up time.

Devices which take care of record-keeping and minor necessities, such as Decanters of Endless Water for desert travel, or the Bullskin Tablespread from the story (spread on a table or the ground, three times/day, it would provide food and drink suitable to everyone seated around it). Portable holes loaded with supplies also fall into this category. No need to keep track of arrows and oil used, just fill up the hole every couple of episodes...

A safe, portable place to sleep. Rods of Security, Daern's Instant Fortress, etc.

Items which allow the PCs to "go where no Elf has gone before", whether it's into space, below the waves, into the river of lava (below the surface), etc. Eventually, other planes and probabilities.

"Signature Items" Roland had his sword and horn, Arthur had Excalibur, Argo had his axe. Many PCs will have their signature items. They can provide you with many ideas for "cool stuff".

Sepulchrave's story hour has demonstrated the power of the mirror of mental prowess. It's a combination scrying and teleportation device.

In general, any item allowing information gathering or teleportation (especially across planar boundaries) will shine at high levels.

The cubic gate is also a good transportation device.

The rings of elemental command can be enormously powerful in the hands of a clever wearer. Not to mention the fact that you have to activate them - built in plot hook!

You could build entire campaigns around some of the artifacts, such as the ever-popular staff of the magi, or the orbs of dragonkind.

I'd say the best items are custom made by or for the pcs. For example, how likely is it that your ranger/cleric of the god of destroying oozes will run across an oozebane, flaming, acid resistance weapon? Yet that's exactly what he really needs...

I've found that item creation feats at higher levels are great for customizing the party, as long as there's enough wealth, time and xp to use them.

I don't suppose they're really all that high level, but gloves of storing are just plain cool. Also, the 'called' ability on armor can be quite nice. Used together, you could be quite wicked in infiltration.
