Could Rituals cover Skills?

Fallen Seraph

First Post
This has maybe been discussed before, but it was a random thought that popped into my head.

What if many of the skills that are missing have instead become rituals. This could work out actually since things like; Perform, Craft, Decipher Script, Forgery, Appraise, in some cases Profession.

These could all be covered by basic rituals, especially if Rituals require various skills in combination to work, and it means too there can be varying degrees of rituals, so... Perform: Simple Dance, Sing a Sonnet, etc.

They could each have their own skill checks for it and own unique DCs and effects.

*Shrugs shoulders* just an idea.

Considering it appears that only clerics and wizards do rituals, that seems unlikely

They have stated that everyone can use Rituals, so why can't there be common ones anyone can pick up?

This also could work into my idea of Rituals using Skills,Clerics would be of-course more adapt at Divine Rituals since it uses Religion Skill while Wizards would be more adapt at Arcane Ritual since its uses the Arcana Skill.

Hmm.....I don't remember them saying that but I may have missed it. Certainly out of the pregen characters only the wizard and cleric can use rituals, so if other classes can learn to do so it's most likely through feats or multi-classing. Either way doesn't quite sound like a system designed to emulate skills.

Well I don't see it as emulating skills, but rather taking what were once skills and bringing it into a new area.

Skills left are more widely usable, they can range in a variety of ways they can do things.

The ones left out are more specific in their intent, which is why they could fit into Rituals.

But the problem is that this would mean that in order to say sing or make a dress, you'd either need to be a wizard or cleric or have some other feat or ability that gives you magic ritual training.

But that is why I am saying a Ritual doesn't NEED to be magical, it is just the Wizard and Cleric and other magic-users would have more affinity towards magical rituals.

Mundane rituals anyone could use, but certain classes probably be better.

Just like say there could be a weapon training ritual where a martial character trains with his weapon.

Currently though it appears that rituals are magical and require magical training. Rather then rewrigint the entire ritual system to allow farmers the ability to use them, it might be easier to have farming your field covered under something different.

It isn't really rewriting the Ritual system to simply have it that Magical and Non-Magical Rituals both have distinct Skills/areas of influence.

Like what specific mechanical reason that we know of is there that rituals have to be just-magical?

The fact that out of all the pregen characters, only the wizard and the cleric have the ability to cast rituals. So if rituals including singing or crafting then only wizards and clerics would be able to do that (barring special feats).
