I've read about 1/3 of this thread so far, so forgive me if my post repeats anything that was already said. My wife and I are Christians bringing up our sons in a Christian household. Some might call us "Bible Thumpers". One thing that we believe, personally, that doesn't sit well with a lot of the elder members of our church is that an active imagination does not, in any way, reflect on your moral or spiritual condition. My wife plays a druid in my campaign. It's pretend. She does not practice druidic rituals, nor does her in-game character's actions reflect, in any way, her true spiritual beliefs. (She doesn't even look druish... doh!). Some more conservative fellows have a serious problem with the depiction of evil in D&D. Well, some of it is pretty vile and dark (hmm... could make for an interesting, if controversial book idea??)... but again, it's PRETEND. The Bible is chock full -- cover to cover -- with depictions of evil that are quite REAL (by our measure of belief, that is). Anyway, we had touched on the idea of a strictly Bible-based RPG. The Old Testament, and especially post-rapture Revelation are ripe with good RPG material. Any of you that have read the "Left Behind" series should also know that there's no shortage of violence or supernatural activity in the future of Biblical history. There is a lot of good material there. However, we ditched the idea for a couple of reasons. First, we are serious about our beliefs. We want our relationship with God to remain true and REAL, and not only exist in make-believe. Second, it's too easy to cross the line into blasphemy when putting God into the mix. Not "a god"... but God. I have read the King James Bible from cover to cover four times... complete. There is nothing in there, I guarantee it, against playing games, or using your imagination. Practicing sorcery or witchcraft... summoning demons... killing... stealing... cheating... yep, they're all big Biblical no-no's. But, if any of you out there are actually doing any of these things in real-life anyway, you've got bigger issues than what game you decide to play.
