kreynolds, I started an identical thread a while back. I don't have access to the search feature but try a search for "Questions About Counterspelling" or something along those lines. I, too, got very interested in the idea of a dedicated counterspelling mage. If you can't find the thread then I'll summarize some of what came up that hasn't already been mentioned here. Legends & Lairs Paths of Magic book has a metamagic feat called Counterspell Riposte. It adds a +2 level adjustment to a spell and allows you to cast it as a free action after successfully counterspelling an enemy spell. I thought it was a very neat feat and well-balanced. No one really gave much feedback on it. I agreed that the Quintessential Wizard material was largely worthless. I think Mongoose did a pretty bad job handling the mechanics for a lot of the feats. I've been real happy with their Slayer's Guide material and some of the Encyclopaedia Arcane material (flavor text moreso than spells), but the Quintessential series is subpar in my opinion. It's already been mentioned in this thread, but the ArchMage's mastery of counterspelling ability. Since the PrC is so controversial due to its other abilities, I asked opinions on whether the ability would fit well as a feat with the appropriate prereqs for campaigns that disallowed the ArchMage. Unfortunately, I didn't get any real feedback for that. I think including mastery of counterspelling in the Improved and Reactive Counterspell feat progression along with perhaps some other requirements would work: Spellcraft ranks, Intelligence, caster level, and/or whatever else. The Guild Mage of Waterdeep PrC has an ability called Focused Dispel. It grants a +2 bonus to dispel checks. This I have no personal qualms about making into a feat since it falls in well with Spell Focus, Spell Penetration, and Spell Girding. I'd also feel fine about making a Greater Focused Dispel that gives a +4 bonus that doesn't stack. Depending on how many feats you want to keep free for offense or item creation, Spell Girding or a homebrewed Greater Spell Girding would possibly fit the character. A master of counterspells would probably have more insight into reinforcing their own magics against dispels. I'd argue against Spell Focus: Abjuration. If you're going to do Spell Focus with any school I'd argue making it Transmutation, since when not given the opportunity to counterspell you could still unleash with debuffs (slow is devestating), polymorphs, disintegrates, et al. Disintegrate is something any counterspeller would want for all the different spell effects that it's able to blow away. Good luck with the character. :)
