It happens at times and will lead to (some) bad blood. Something that friends will easier get over than others, but it's still a dicey thing. Plus, your compatriots/fellow players (who are presumably friends of the both of you ) might want to avenge their comrade - which could cause a running battle and vendetta of kills and counterkills. And , from a GM's point of view, I would severely frown on it as potentially very harmful to the campaign (and any successor the two of you might play in) and would in all likelihood consider alignemnt before and after such an attack very carefully. This chaotic evil behaviour in most people's books. From the purely rules-wise Point of view, let me add this - as the target is prone, he will also incur an AoO when he tries to stand up to cast which may just be the thing to look for. BTW - if you plan to go for the CdG approach, get the biggest weapon you can get your hands on (and swing), even if you are not really proficient in it, to raise the automatic maximum damage some more. Battleaxes are great for this (x3 crit modifier), picks have their uses, too (due to the x4 crit multiplier you have 6x4 = 24 points plus sneak and what's not as base damage... DC 34+ for the Fort save, and even if he makes it, he is even further down on HP ..). Swing two-handedly if you can, to maximize any Str bonus you might have
