Crawling PCs considered prone?

In our next session there is a good chance that some of the PCs will be crawling in some small passages. All the PCs are Medium sized and the passages are approximately 2.5' x 2.5'. For game mechanics should they be considered prone? (-4 to attack, +4 to be hit and no melee weapons (only crossbow))

If anyone has a better condition penalty for crawling I would like to know, or if there is something in the core rules I have missed could someone point it out.

Prone sounds perfectly reasonable. Note that prone characters don't lose their Dex bonus to AC, so aren't especially vulnerable to sneak attacks.

If they are crawling in a tunnel don't forget to limit their weapon use. Crawling Characters in General should only be able to use light weapons.

I think you mean no ranged weapons...

I would also restrict them to piercing weapons - there's no way you would have the space to swing a bludgeoning or slasing weapon in a space that small.

By pure techincal reading of the PHB, one cannot move while prone. In all mentions of being prone, the only movement described follows getting up.

However, what you talked about seems reasonable.

Regarding weapon use:

Small piercing weapons only (this includes a light or hand crossbow).

I was using the prone condition as an approximation of a situation and not to mean that a character is prone when crawling per se.

And yes, drnuncheon, I did mean ranged weapons.
