Most of the weirdest battle moves I've made were in epic level campaigns, which require way too much set up to be funny in a thread like this one. But, several of my players in low-mid campaigns have done amazing things, which I've cited in another thread on best and worst players. One halfling monk grabbed onto a ballista bolt and had himself shot into the sails of the fast closing pirate ship. I gave huge penalties to the shooter, but, wouldn't you know it, the shooter had a true strike spell. That same monk did the flying grapple thing too, entangling the manticore's wings, and leading to a collision with a wall. I had a new player who was playing a barbarian beastmaster who really did have the character close their eyes to defeat a magic missile. That player's later choice to have a pack of hyenas as an animal companion made every combat interesting, as these CE animals were waiting for that character to get low on HP so that they could challenge the beastmaster's position as alpha dog. One goblin paladin's dog armored dog mount fell overboard and began to sink. The paladin quickly turns to the mage/rogue and asks, "Do you have my back?" He said yes to the paladin, who then preceded to jump into the water after his mount. The mage was furious when the combatting ships slowly sailed away while they were clinging to two of those unmoveable rods in the middle of the ocean.
