Creating a Homegrown Campaign World

Sam

First Post
Don't know if I'm finally making it into the realms of "experienced" GM, or if I've just lost my mind . Either way, I've decided that I want to create my own homegrown campaign setting.

I've got a group that currently plays in a Greyhawk-based game, and we have a ton of fun there. I'm just looking down the road a bit and don't want to use another published campaign setting for the next campaign. I've got all the 3E Forgotten Realms books, and love most of them, but don't want to do FR. I've got Oathbound and really like that. I may transport my Greyhawk campaign there when they finish RttToEE.

I think I'm just getting a bit of a desire to create my own world rather than play in someone elses.

So, the question for the day here is: Are there any good sources on how to create a full-featured campaign world? I could (and probably will) go through all the campaign settings I own or can borrow and get some thoughts on how they did it, but I don't want to pass up any other well reasoned advice. The DMG has some good advice as well, but I'm looking for something akin to a template. Something that will help me flesh out all of the important details that make the difference between a generic world and an immersive playing experience.

So ENWorld, what say you on the topic of world-building?:D

Well, you could start here.

DOH! :p I looked through a couple of pages here of recent threads, and didn't see this on. I specifically didn't want to have a situation like this. Must have missed it.

Thanks.
