No swords in war? Just a note to the proposer of the setting, if black powder muzzle loaders are the extent of firearms technology, then the sword should still very much be a weapon of war. Though pikes are more likely. Cavalry charges (with swords) were still viable military tactics, as was the bayonet charge up untill the advent of the machine gun in WW 1. Until you have cartridge weapons you simply cannot lay down a fast enough rate of fire to invalidate a melee weapon charge. Even the best of the best at using muzzleloaders vs Melee weapons (IE The british square) still lost to the sword weilding Zulu, though not to many others. _____________________________________________________________________________ Under the setting restrictions I see no reason why military developments would not mirror ours so Musket and Pike rule the battle fields while Cavalry gets all the glory. _____________________________________________________________________________ The centaur tribes are enjoying renewed interest in their services as mercenaries. Their distaste for heavy armour has always made them ineffective as heavy cav. They have found a new role however as their brute strength makes them very effective as artillery men who can haul their own cannon out of combat and reposition them much faster than humans in combat.
