Its just when that damage is more than about 50% extra problems will pop up.  I did think of a new weapon style for fighters and maybe rangers. Daggermaster similar to the archery one where you get +2 to hit with daggers. Not this can be used in mellee or ranged and has no -5/+10 option like sharpshooter.  Some better feats available for dex based melee might also be an option. Bonus dice of damage, bonus to hit, disadvantage to get hit as a reaction would be options I would be looking at. An avenger Paladin for example can actually cast bless and give himself advantage which lets them use GWM feat at full potential. THat is probably the prime example of how good GWM is compared with the other options.</blockquote>
