Creativity in monsters

I'm looking for good ideas on how to ambush a party

In my campaign, on the roll of a 20 for an encounter check, the party is ambushed.

I've thought of things like pits, fire, cages (falling in woods), standard surrounding, but thats about all

Any ideas?

No really, ahve the aprt meet an attractive women, and then they (hopefully) get lured by her into a state of unreadiness and get ambushed...

Did you try good-old fashioned cross fire?

X - are the bad guys with ranged weapons.
|| - indicates the road
p - indicates a player character.

The archers shoot from two directions. When the party gets too close, they have their infantry move up to guard the archers. The second someone casts a visible spell the archers target that character. Make sure the archers have cover.
