We're going to be starting a new d20 game soon, and we're in the process of doing characters. We'll be using the Call of Cthulhu rules for character creation for the most part, but the game itself is more of a mix of horror and urban fantasy; not very Cthulhian in itself, but with elements thereof. The game is set in Boston, in the present day. I've played tons of characters in a modern setting, so I was kinda stuck on what to do this time around, and the GM suggested that I'd never played a criminal. Interesting idea, so I ran with it. But.. I'm not sure I'm doing it 'right' or if I could do it 'better'. This is where y'all come in... Zane is a 24-year-old guy with a gift for gab. 16 Int, 15 Cha. He has several things he does to get money (Pending further setting details from the GM, I took Wealth twice and rolled pretty well; he's got about 75k in savings and makes about 70k a year). Primarily, he's a video pirate; he's the guy that can get you The Two Towers on DVD right now, today. He also does software and music piracy. He also makes fake ID's. Any little side job that might get him some cash, he'll go for. He's a facilitator. He won't make the illegal porno vid, but he'll sell them the equipment to do so. That kind of stuff. He thinks he's kept his nose clean this way, but Zane has a boundless talent to lie not only to others but to himself as well. He's constructed this eleborate fantasy for himself where he's simply a businessman, providing people what they want or need at a reasonable price and a reasonable profit to himself. He's very smart, and good at his craft. Maxed out computer skill, Craft (Photography-digital/video), and Research among others (I basically had to make up my own Occupation for this; he's a Criminal but he doesn't have much in the way of sneaky skills) like Diplomacy, Intimidate and Bluff. What I need from you: I need more in the way of a justification for why he's not in a legit business. He's smart, but he's not equally as wise (Wis 10). Maybe that's the reason? Also, he is a compulsive liar, deluding himself as well as everyone else. I need more things for him to be connected to others in the group -- I'm not sure who those will be at the moment. He certainly has underworld contacts and stuff, with a high Gather Info, and he can get stuff like guns. Should this be enough to 'cement' him in with the others? Zane is smart enough to recognize that he could get caught at some point. What should he be doing to protect himself? Lawyer on retainer? I don't think he makes enough cash for that. Swiss bank accounts? Multiple ID's? More motivational stuff. With his skills he could probably make three times what he's making now, if he were legit. Why is he a crook? Greed is an obvious one. Being a compulsive liar is another; he spins vast and very elaborate fantasies. But I need more suggestions. Who else does he know? He has the opportunity to be associated with some truly terrible people. Slavers. Pornographers. Data pirates. Drugs. Guns. I need more suggestions. Hobbies: Zane fancies himself an independent filmmaker. One of his prime fantasies is 'when all this is over, I can be a filmmaker'. He's a good traditional photographer. Either one of these could easily lead him into occult encounters, but are there more?
