Critical Lord of the Iron Fortress Question

Uller

Adventurer
***SPOILERS!!!***

Tomorrow my players are entering the fortress and we have a temporary player who will be running a Rogue with a ring of blinking.

Question: In the Rigus section of the adventure it mentions that spells that rely on ethereal travel do not function in Rigus because it is on an Outer Plane. Does the same hold true for Acheron?

Question 2: In area 5 (Guest Quarters) of the Fortress, it mentions that the mind flayers cannot use astral projection or plane shift due to a lesser forbiddance spell...what the heck is Lesser Forbiddance? Does it exits? I can't find it in the PHB, SRD or in the new spells section of the adventure, nor does it mention it in the character's spell list who is said to have cast it...should I ignore it?

Thanks!

Hellooooooo! Anybody?

I at least need an answer on the blinking thing...Does MotP say anything about ethereal travel being impossible on the outer planes?

Question 1

Since Archeron is also an Outer Plane, I would assume that Ethereal travel does not function their either. If you look at the D&D Cosmology Diagram on p. 7 of MoTP, you can clearly see that the Ethereal Plane has no connection to any of the Outer Planes. There *are* ways to enter the Outer Planes from the Ethereal using Ethereal curtains. However, although their entrances are on the Ethereal, they must move through the Astral plane.

In other words, you can't ethereally travel on Outer Planes.

Question 2

I've never heard of this spell myself. I would just use Forbiddance insstead.

Thanks gfunk. That's what I was looking for. I don't have MotP so I was going to revert to my 1e DMG!

Forbiddance doesn't quite work because the creatures affected by it are unaware of that fact. Forbiddance has a rather noticable effect...(damage and all...)

Thanks!

I would have "Lesser Forbiddance" work like Forbiddance in that teleportation and planar travel is impossible, but I would drop the damage. That seems to be the author's intent, anyway.

It's really up to you how ethereal spells and effects work on other planes. The MotP is more a tool-kit for DMs than a list of how things are.

But if the author of the adventure thinks that the ethereal does not extend to Rigus, he probably thinks the same thing about Acheron. So I would judge that a ring of blinking wouldn't work.

Some outer planes could have their own ethereal planes, though. It really is up to you.
