[CRPGs] I have found the Nirvana of CRPGs!

It distills everything I love about RPGs into one small program.

Go here: www.progressquest.com

Download the file, run the program, and I guarantee you'll find this to be the best RPG for the money you've ever played!

Progressquest is a totally self-contained CRPG, full of stupid monsters, dumb class names, and weird races. When you launch it, it runs your character through a 4 chapter "story" that consists of being assigned quests ("Fetch a cake." "Defeat three storm iguanas.") and killing monsters. Lots of monsters. When you kill them, you get odd stuff; when your encumbrance fills up, you return to town and sell stuff, and use the money to upgrade your equipment, then you head back out to the Killing Fields to kill more stuff.

And you never touch a key.

The program is a magnificent joke, designed to run by itself and amuse you. Sagiro showed it to me last night, and I almost applauded. Have fun!

Whee! I was attacking with a sharp stick. Now, after a number of successful quests, I have a lace gambeson for armor and a -1 claw hammer for a weapon. I'm moving up in the world!

I downloaded a little spoof CRPG a few months ago called Statbuilder, which basically pokes fun at Everquest and Diablo style games.

The Statbuilder program itself is fairly simplistic. It's worth glimpsing at the website, though, even if you don't download the program. It sports tongue-in-cheek FAQ's and Reviews. Even the ReadMe file that comes with the download is part of the whole joke.

Alas, I am a game junkie....

And this is perfect :)

Thank you Mr Cat, I had just finished Arcanum and was looking for something new. I just got two rooms done for my game on Wednesday, and took a shower AND gained 2 levels. ;)

Cool! So you can play this game and DM the Iconics adventure, at the same time! ;)

Hope your trip went well, Kevin - welcome back.

I just have to say that this game is great! I can see myself spending a great deal of time with this. Why, I've been playing since this morning, and already Fred the Talking Pony Tickle-Mimic has fetched lunchpails, needles, cookies, and socks. He's delivered canoes and coins. He's exterminated the Vampires, the Girl Scouts, and the Bacon Elementals, twice. He's discovered that Eagle Scout badges are worth just as much as Rakshasa pajamas and Pegasus ailerons to the merchants in town, and he's upgraded his sharp stick to a -1 Bastard Sword! And I'm still in Act 1.

My life is complete. ;)

I've let it run most of the day. Grumdrig the Greater Gnome, a (currently) 7th level Bastard Lunatic is actually starting to acquire some cool stuff (I thought he'd never get beyond the +1 parasol!). Hate to lose the little guy when I shut it down; I think I have a new NPC...
