I think I've made a mistake in giving my PCs a crystal hypnosis ball; I did it with a general idea that it was planted by a group of yuan-ti on a sorcerer/druid whom the yuan-ti were thus able to dominate.
I didn't expect the PCs to be able to kill this druid/sorcerer as easily as they did, and now they have the ball. They know it is a crystal ball, but the first and only time they've used it so far, the party sorceress made her save, and was able to use it normally.
Has anyone else used one of these in their campaign? If so, how long did it take the PC to realize it was cursed? What did it do that was different than a "real" crystal ball? Would the yuan-ti be able to control what was seen? Would they, as makers of the ball, be connected to it in some way?
Or are the deceitful images totally random? Are they "worst fears" of the viewer? Are they truthful images but simply edited to look bad, or are they actually false events?
I'm less concerned with the absolute book truth than with making a good story here, but I'd like some other folks' ideas and opinions before I go too far astray.
