I'll just toss out another story that is in my opinion an often-overlooked Lovecraft classic: "The Strange High House in the Mist." It's almost a prose-poem. Joshi gives it very little love, IIRC, but I think it's great. I've used it in D&D games (read the descriptions aloud for an adventure set there).
And I'll second "The Statement of Randolph Carter." I read that one to my 8th-grade classes every Halloween, and it is almost always well-received.
