Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.
Thank you for the detailed breakdown and explanation. I can accept that rationale above to justify the rule. Can I just point out though…would it have killed the designers to actually explain it like that? I’m still not sure I would completely implement this in this way. As the DM, you’ve given me another number to keep track of (passive perception), another special circumstance to monitor (do they get advantage on passive perception?) when I could also just apply basic logic, i.e. “No, you cannot just walk in front of the guard at the gate without a distraction. What will cause that distraction?” Stealth is more than just sight, also. It’s also the ability to pass by unheard. I’ve never thought of passive perception as something to roll for when someone walks directly in front of a monster. I’ve always thought of it as “You are trying to keep out of eyeshot and maneuver around them darting from pillar to pillar or in the bushes - do the orcs notice you doing that?” I reserve the right as DM to not just say “Hiding isn’t possible here” but also “You were able to hide but with what you are attempting to do, it’s impossible to remain hidden.”
