Disclaimer: I received a review copy Let me start out by saying that I like I like toolkit books. Any book that provides me with lots of new options that are well written and focused will at least find some use at my table Silven Publishing’s Curses does this quite well The PDF comes in a 9.25 meg zip file with a POD copy, an onscreen copy a home printing copy and the high res cover all as separate files. This is a nice value. The onscreen version is also book marked which I appreciate. The layout is clean and efficient giving 24 pages that are easy to use This book is very rules intensive and while it covers a lot of ground it sticks to the topic at hand It starts out with a definition of the curse subtype and a brief and well written over view of historical curses. Really the only thing missing from this section was a Gypsy centric section (though the Evil Eye will cover it well enough) After this is a good comprehensive description of the SRD spells and how they related to curses. Interestingly the Power Word spells are lumped in as curses. I don't see this as a problem though it is an odd choice The next section includes 17 new spells, all curse related excepting arguable the transmutation spell Color . The spells cover all the core classes. While the PDF could not cover the Hexblade (due to it being closed content) tossing some of these spells on the list seems like a natural thing to do. I like it when a product is wellenough wortten to suggest new uses I do have some complaints though. A number of the spells (such as the second level spell Curse of Prevarication) are permanent. In a game with plentiful magic and one or more caster with remove curse this isn't a problem but the spells power is far too high for its level and frankly permanent curses can be game wrecking. Not good. I would be unlikely to allow some of these spells into my game unless I adjusted the level or the duration I would also have liked to see some epic support for the kingdom wide curse so popular in faerie tales. The nest section includes a dozen feats, all curse related. The feats are a mixed bag in balance, ranging from minor bonus to curse DC's or to curse saves. Others allow a caster to burn (permanently) hit points to negate saves against curses (not a good idea ) or enhance power words or trigger curses upon death of the target (to raise as an undead) or of the caster (which I like) The final section gives 4 prestige classes, The Blood Hexer a kind of Sorcerer with a focus on cursing, the Evil Eye which is a Cuthuloid curse master, The Hexomancer which is a kind of torturing curse scientist PRC and lastly a righter of wrongs, lawful only PRC called the Servant of Vengeance. These prestige classes mesh well with the feats and spells contained in the book and are well written On the whole this is a decent book with good writing and if you use a lot of curses (say run Ravenloft or play the aforementioned Hexblade) it is a good buy. At $4 it is even cheap enough for a casual read
