I was pondering over doing via the Saga rules today and here are some ideas and observations.
-- Sorcerers --
I think it would make things interesting if we just dropped the Sorcerer class and made it into a feat. Sorcery.
The Sorcery feat would be similar to Force Sensitivity
- Anyone can take it.
- It allows the character to make "Use Magic" (or whatever skill is created for arcane magic) skill checks Untrained.
- It grants a number of Inherent Spells or Powers (maybe 1+Cha Mod when you take it and Cha Mod for each additional instance of the feat taken).
- These powers are considered to be a part of the character's natural abilities even though they work like other spells. If a character takes the Wizard/Mage class, the Sorcerer and Wizard spells are accounted seperately.
- This would allow for anyone to be a "Sorcerer". (i.e. you could have both a Fighter Sorcerer and a Mage Sorcerer).
-- Wizards (I prefer the term Mage) --
My wizard works by a hybrid of old and new.
- The Wizard class grants an evolving (by level) Spell Matrix (SP).
- Wizards also keep Grimoires to store their known spells in.
- A Wizard can have a number of Spell Formulae "loaded" into their SP at any given time (dependant on level).
- When a spell is cast, it is spent from the SP (like a Force Power Array).
- The Wizard can recover (and change) his SP contents by studying his Grimoire much like a Jedi does with force.
- A Wizard can reload a spell from his Grimoire into a spent space with a Full Round Action and a Successful Concentration Check (DC could be increased in combat).
- Wizards would also require a Focus for their spells (i.e. Wand, Staff, etc). This could even be the above Spell Matrix.
