It’s at this point- just after McGow’s last ‘5’, that the players call a halt to the game- or else they beg the DM to call a break so that they can talk about how they are going to try and get out of this mess. I’m a nice guy, and I always need to pee (I’m at that age) or make tea, so knock yourself out- have a chat about things. They do; from the kitchen I heard shouting (at times). The players also have a few questions for me about the plot- how does it work story-wise if we all go down trying here, that kind of thing- but my answer is- as it always and forever is- for all DMs everywhere- ‘I’ll/we’ll make something up to fit the story.’ Eventually, we get back to the game. C-Fax uses his last spell slot to heal himself; he has the best chance of hitting (and killing) stuff thanks to his Bahamut Bless. As if to prove a point the next thing the paladin does is slice the hobgoblin grunt- it’s down to just one hit point. The cheering is back. It’s relentless… Snakebite leaps to her feet, smashes her staff into the staggering grunt- dead, and then rushes Kerrang and thumps her foot into the middle of his chest. DONG! Kerrang growls, unimpressed. And then cuts down Snakebite. Some people screamed at this point. Not all of them. We’ll get to that. But for now, there is hope… Mavis gets Kerrang with her Sacred Flames- as does C-Fax again with his longsword, while Travis shoots the hobgoblin soldier. Kerrang is looking very beat up. The cheering is back. They can do this. So, they keep saying. Kerrang is blowing hard and mostly shouting encouragement to his last trooper, the hobgoblin soldier. Then Kerrang cuts down McGow. McGow is not happy. Al, who plays McGow, goes afk for five minutes to get a (proper) drink. One person screamed, I remember it sounded like a terrifying hiccup (thanks Sandy). And then the hobgoblin soldier slices a chunk out of C-Fax, the paladin is down to one hit point. Then… Mavis hits Kerrang with a Sacred Flames and- it’s enough. Kerrang splutters, flails and drops. The last hobgoblin soldier attempts to slice C-Fax and then- when it misses- it dashes towards the stairs, and… Is hit (a Crit) by C-Fax. It dies. And it’s at this point that all the players started screaming. McGow fails his first Death Save, he rolled a ‘5’. Mavis gets to the dwarf with a Spare the Dying cantrip, while Snakebite makes her fourth Death Save and rolls her third success- she’s stable. Kenji’s laughter sounded like tears, or vice-versa. It was a cracker. Although Al (playing McGow) hated it, he hit twice in his first turn and then never again- his highest roll for the rest of the evening for anything involving a D20 was a ‘5’. He rolled a lot of ‘5’s, at least five of them. Not happy. And that was approx. ten turns of action. 290 XP each for encounter #19. Next time, a little bit of après the encounter, note- C-Fax, Snakebite & McGow are broken, Mavis has taken a ding, while Travis hasn’t got a scratch on him. Cheers goonalan and the Tokyo Massive.
