Catch The Pidgin: Psylk’s Cutters Encounter #003: Return of the Kobold Ambush aka Egg Nog Sings the Blues Aceeeeeeed! The Adventurers (in alphabetical order). Lunk (played by Pete), Male Rock Gnome (Outlander) Barbarian Level 1 Muldoon (played by Rob), Male Human (Charlatan) Rogue Level 1 Psylk (played by Rob), Female Drow (Spy) Ranger Level 1 Stonk Drubbins (played by Pete), Male Mountain Dwarf (Soldier) Cleric of Dumathoin Level 1 DEAD PCs Waiting. To-do list/Quests- Find Dicky Bird aka The Fat Pidgin and bring him home safely to Edna Gingster. Has Dicky been captured or killed? Find the lair of the kobold bandits and kill ‘em all. For the intro to this fight then see the Genocide Squad’s playthrough up above- all of the encounters here are going to be played exactly the same for both adventuring parties. And so… Here we go again, only with the other mob. Egg-Nog and the rest of the kobolds stop singing, and remarkably a couple of the kobold warriors get initiative- alas neither of them can make their attacks stick- no hits, but Psylk is in melee combat already and facing off against two enemies. She’s also just pressed her SUPERNOVA button- so, power extreme. Psylk stabs hard, and repeatedly, having drawn her shortsword and dagger- her second attack is a Crit, and the first kobold warrior is down and dead. The other kobold warrior here is left only lightly wounded by the drow’s frenzied attack. Psylk makes a kill. Keep in mind the kobold warriors have 6d6+6 HP each, rolled randomly by Fantasy Grounds. Muldoon skewers the wounded kobold warrior with his rapier, and with a little extra sneak, but it’s still not enough to kill it. At which point a kobold sneak scurries from its hiding place behind one of the eastern bluffs and sticks its dagger in Muldoon’s gut, the rogue screams, swears and staggers- and survives (but only just). Muldoon survives, but he’s down to 2 HP already. The second kobold sneak attempts to repeat the trick only with Stonk Gubbins, however the sturdy drunken dwarven priest somehow manages to avoid the kobold’s (with advantage) attack. Stonk, seeing Muldoon hissing and gasping- clutching at the bloody wound in his gut, fires a Healing Word into the rogue. That’s nice. Then, for good measure, the priest of secrets (Dumathoin) smashes his warhammer into the chest of the kobold sneak that just attempted to stab him up. The poor creature expires moments later trying to suck air into collapsed lungs- its ribcage shattered and broken. The staggering dwarven priest thrusts his warhammer into the chest of another of the kobold warriors. The kobold immediately stabs back and now Stonk is bleeding too. “Yer bug’r!” Stonk hiccups. Lunk does a little dance of his own- his Rage dance, the gibbering rock gnome slams his battleaxe into one of the wounded kobold warriors, leaving it screaming and critically wounded (on 1 HP). Two kobolds down but Stonk, and particularly Muldoon, are hurting. Alas Lunk’s follow up attack is high wide and handsome, leaving him open to a riposte- Lunk gets stabbed right back too. Everyone except Psylk is taking hits- but she’s rocking a SUPERNOVA. Meantime, up on the bluff, Egg-Nog sings the Song of Chopper- and all of the kobolds (including Egg-Nog) get some temporary hit points (but only 3 of them each). Alas the kobold war priest’s follow up Poison Spray spell is way off target. And that’s the end of the first turn of combat- two kobolds deceased, a sneak and a warrior. Ding! Ding! Round Two. Muldoon has to spend an Action Point to make a hit from a kobold warrior go away (reroll = miss) the rogue stays on his feet. Psylk is still facing off against a kobold warrior- shortsword and dagger in hand, the ranger stabs and slashes repeatedly, and again her second hit is a Crit. The second kobold warrior falls (there are six of them). The ranger now has space and time to work- she sheathes her blades and grabs out her bow. Seconds later and the last kobold sneak is also sprawling, an arrow embedded in its face, its dying. That’s both of the kobold sneaks dead already. Moments later and yet another of the kobold warriors takes a hit. Psylk in action. Muldoon too, now also sans enemies, reaches for his bow- and then fires- a Crit, the kobold warrior that Psylk just wounded drops dead. Three down- three left. Muldoon is not done. There are just two kobold warriors left in the road, one of them sprouts an arrow, and then moments later- yet another, and this one’s a Crit too, somehow it manages to survive the ordeal. Muldoon’s dice are on fire. Stonk hammers at the newly wounded kobold warrior, leaving it critically wounded. The warriors however fight back- Lunk must burn an Action Point (reroll = miss) to avoid another shortsword hit. The rock gnome barbarian gibbers in a frenzy (not the power- he’s just very annoyed)- he smashes the bastard down that just tried to stab him, and then slashes furiously at the last kobold warrior on the road, moments later it falls to his axe. Five out of six kobold warriors are dead, it’s another massacre. The road is clear- Lunk therefore attempts to scramble up the bluff to get to Egg-Nog, but he’s mostly out of actions, and so is only just started on his climb. Egg-Nog, atop the bluff, orders the kobold warrior up there with him to climb down and get into the fight with the adventurers, it salutes and obeys. The warrior scrambles down the bluff and then swings heartily at Psylk, missing repeatedly Moments later back atop the bluff the kobold war priest, burps and spews his acid breathe over Stonk and Lunk- the pair survive the ordeal, but Stonk is on the brink. “Yer bug’r!” Stonk captions his pain. Psylk has still not taken a hit. The kobolds however are paying with their lives. Another Poison Spray goes off-course, Psylk is unaffected. And that’s the end of turn two- with only two kobolds left in the fight- a fresh kobold warrior and a likewise uninjured, and still furiously ranting, Egg-Nog up on top of the bluff. Psylk dodges back and away from the kobold warrior menacing her- and then sinks two arrows into the now screaming little creature. It survives. Muldoon also has his bow at the ready, the smooth-talking rogue has however another target in mind- he fires an arrow into Egg-Nog up on the bluff. The kobold war priest screams and snaps foul insults back in yapping draconic. Stonk meantime scurries over to the last kobold warrior and starts swinging, two big hits with his warhammer and the critter is now heavily wounded. Lunk joins the action, alas the rock gnome is already out of Action Points (he burned one re-rolling his ‘1’ initiative at the start of the fight, and several more avoiding hits- or else getting me to reroll and miss) he scores a monster hit on the last kobold warrior, but… it’s still not enough. Egg-Nog is shouting insults down every chance he can, and threatening the PCs with CHOPPER-CHOP! The ranting Egg-Nog flings an Acid Splash at Lunk and Stonk, the pair scurry out of harm’s way, Stonk only surviving thanks to a well spent Action Point. That however is the end of the third turn of action. Still just two kobolds left in the fight, although the warrior in the road is critically wounded already. Psylk nods at Muldoon- her eyes drift to the last staggering kobold warrior, the rogue smirks by way of replay. The drow ranger stows her bow and leaps up the bluff in three swinging (brachiating) strides. A second later and her bow is unslung, and… breath in- an arrow thuds into the chest of a now spluttering, and wide-eyed, Egg-Nog. Egg-Nog lives however, and Psylk is all out of actions. Back down below, Muldoon- as good as his word (or else smirk) stows his bow, grabs out his rapier and skewers the last kobold warrior standing- dead, the rogue makes for the bluff, and quickly climbs his way to the top. Just Egg-Nog to deal with. Egg-Nog goes quiet, and then thinks about running. Stonk and Lunk- now bereft of enemies to kill, follow their companions up the bluff- the pair summit (the bluff is only ten feet high so, ‘summit’ may be stretching it) and fling whatever they have to hand at the now retreating Egg-Nog. Stonk’s throwing hammer catches the kobold war priest a glancing blow. Egg-Nog tries one last shot, the kobold war priest flings an Acid Splash at Stonk and Muldoon- who both, coincidently, burned their last Action Points on the turn previous. There is screaming- both PCs fail their saves, and so… they’re dying- or else, a note appears on the screen on Fantasy Grounds, it says- So, You Think You Are Dying Part 1 You're probably not. Do you have any healing HD left to spend today? If so spend one now. The kindly DM will remove any untoward status'- like ko'd and prone, and... You fight on! Note, one last thing- you can press the Supernova button now, if you like. You don't have to, but it could keep you alive for longer... maybe. FURTHER NOTE- IN CAPITALS. YOU CAN DO THE ABOVE JUST ONCE IN AN ENCOUNTER- IF YOU ARE REDUCED TO 0 HP OR BELOW AGAIN, GO TO THE NEXT STAGE. And both PCs have a Healing HD left to spend, and so… At the last moment, as Stonk and Muldoon stagger- almost step back off the bluff, they feel a new and sudden burst of energy, and… they’re back in the fight. Neither of the pair are inclined to press the SUPERNOVA button- this fight is almost won. That was the end of the fourth turn of action. Here’s the fifth. It lasts a little longer than you’d think. Psylk keeps firing, but somehow (advantage and +5) only manages to land one hit, Egg-Nog however is now critically wounded (into the last 25% of his HP). Muldoon grabs out a bow and gets a shot off, and another hit- but Egg-Nog is still alive and running. Stonk takes aim, which mainly involves staggering and lurching left and right, wetting a finger- holding it in the air, and the flinging his throwing hammer underarm. It’s not an Olympic sport. The throwing hammer heads skyward. CRUNK- SNAP. What goes up must come down, the throwing hammer smashes into the back of Egg-Nog’s skull, snapping his neck like a twig. The fight is over. The fight is won. The adventurers take a well-earned rest, some of them eat a meal- then they head on back to Kirkgate after searching the bodies and discovering the onyx dragon pendant with a symbol of Orcus scratched in it- valuable, and pointing to the fact that the kobolds are in with the cultists here. The PCs also spend a moment or two identifying the dead bad guys. Stay safe and well you lovely people. Cheers- Pete & Rob and goonalan.
