Hi there! With the closing of the WotC forums, is there much interest in D&D Adventurers League over here?
What is Adventurers League?
But here's the short version.
The trouble with a D&D home game is that your buddy is in a different D&D home game, and it's not like you can pick up your character and just take it over there and play. In order to solve this, Wizards of the Coast (WotC, the guys who make D&D) have come up with a generally reasonable set of campaign guidelines* for how people can build characters, and then they publish 4 hour** "mini adventures" for people to play. People log the gold, XP, and loot and can play with ANY other group who's playing Adventurers League. So you can play at GenCon, then at the local game store, then at PAX, and then at a fun local convention. It makes you portable! Plus, hey, free adventures! Everyone has a logsheet and is responsible for keeping track of his own character's advancement.
Additionally, after an adventure comes out, for about the first month, they have an online survey about the adventure. Did you save the town? Kill the evil wizard? Slay the dragon? Maybe when your group played it, the answers are yes, no, and yes. The next author knows he's got a live wizard and a dead dragon, and decides its time for a dracolich to go back and tear up the town. The player's triumphs (and failures) as well as their choices drive the next step in the story.
If you're interested in getting involved, look for people playing in your area, or online, and join the adventure!

* No, you can't start as a 15th level half silver-dragon/half ogre magi psionic fighter/warlock/paladin with 18 in all your stats and with a +5 vorpal sword.
** or 2 hr, or 8hr, but generally 4hr. This means it's long enough to get in to the story, but doesn't take up your whole day.
