David X. Cohen, co-creator and executive producer of the animated SF series Futurama, told SCI FI Wire that Bender's Game, the latest made-for-DVD movie, pays homage to fantasy games and movies of all kinds, but especially Dungeons & Dragons.

In the new film, Fry (Billy West) and company end up venturing from deep in outer space to deep beneath the earth. And down below they find themselves contending with a medieval universe that's populated by dragons and knights and villains, some of which look very, very familiar.

"If you get the DVD, there's a bonus feature called Dungeons & Dragons & Futurama that I really like," Cohen said in an interview. "I host that. It's for a limited audience. You have the choice to watch it or not, but I think the people who know Dungeons & Dragons will really appreciate it. The movie is not, obviously, specifically about Dungeons & Dragons."

Bender's Game also tips its cap to The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and, of course, Ender's Game.

"We wanted to hit all of these fantasy things," Cohen said. "We wanted to work in any kind of fantasy we could while we had the opportunity. So it's not 100 percent referencing any one specific thing, but a melding of these different but related things. I did play a lot of Dungeons & Dragons as a kid, as did several of our writers, so it was an opportunity to unload some of the joy of our youth onto the rest of the world."

Cohen added, "Also, I think, as far as the appeal to us, a big part of it is the visuals. The idea of seeing the fantasy versions of our characters was very exciting. Seeing Fry as a dragon or Bender [John DiMaggio] as a knight or Leela [Katey Sagal] as a centaur was one of the most fun aspects of the third one." Futurama: Bender's Game arrives in stores on Nov. 4.

I can't wait for this to come out :)

David X. Cohen was able to contribute to the "30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of D&D" book. In it he says, "I'm probably one of the only people on planet Earth, outside of the gaming industry, to have actually used my knowledge of D&D on the job -- and not gotten fired. In the writer's room of Futurama, our shelf of reference books included a full D&D library (God forbid we should misspell ixitxachitl)." :D

It'll go up on my shelf right next to my Futurama RPG - A homebrew based on Star Frontiers with numerous additions and adjustments to fit the Futurama universe.
