While my question was mostly in jest, now that I've heard the mechanic I'm going to toss it into my box labelled Do not want. I'd like to think that most of my characters are generally attentive enough to have noticed at some point during the course of a nine month pregnancy that it was occurring. Having it come as a surprise after it's complete nukes my immersion from orbit. It also kills any story and roleplaying opportunities that can arise during a pregnancy. I mean, there goes my shot at playing the nervous expectant father. There's an overall level of abstraction and retroactive events going on here that's more than I'd be happy with. I want things that occur at specific times (or over the course of months), to happen at those times and be available to use as in-campaign information when they happen, not just months after the fact. Sure, if the horse-theft happens while I'm off on an adventure, I might not hear about it until I drop in to the castle. However, if I do drop into the castle, I should be brought up to date on all relevant happenings, rather than waiting until the end of the year to gain the knowledge. Unless I'm away from my wife or mistress for nine months, a birth should never (well, rarely in the normal course of events) be a surprise event. I'm not saying it's a bad system, and if you enjoy it, that's great. I'm just saying it's definitely not for me.
