I personally own over 120+ books for 3.0 and 3.5 D&D specifically for the purpose of playing the games. There are quite a few books I don't own.

That's not counting Magazines.

or third party books.

or 4.0 books.

or literature novels.

No, he has taken a Vow of Poverty and only uses those books his boon companions deign to lend him, or those crumpled, dusty copies he finds discarded in the rubbish bins of his local game store and which can be deemed to have no value.
