D&D Combat Manager App

Do you play D&D4E? Have an Insider subscription and use the Character Builder?
There's a new app out today on the internet. It's called, rather imaginatively, the "D&D Combat Manager". This application can open and read the XML files that the Character Builder generates in order to provide you with a 'digital' character sheet, which can vastly simplify your tabletop gaming experience.

Key Features:
•Works off your D&D Character Builder character data; you don't have to import any extra data or data sources!
•Connects to the D&D Insider Compendium to retrieve data so that YOU don't have to look it up!
•Automatically capable of rolling your attacks and spitting out the damage dealt; no more having to add up all those small numbers!
•Able to properly handle multi-target attacks, giving a seperate attack roll per target and then a singular damage amount!
•Able to track your HP, and properly handle temporary hitpoints and healing!
•Displays your powers in a convenient list format; click the 'attack' button to activate!
•Uses the Microsoft Voice Engine to read aloud what is happening when you attack or roll a skill; turn up the volume so the DM can hear!
•Automatically updates itself every time there is a new release!
•COMPLETELY FREE!
Get the app today, at D&D Combat Manager

Has anybody tried this? I'd rather roll dice myself, but if it's got an initiative, hp and status tracker that's easy to manipulate, I might go for it with a laptop beside the game table.

I'm a little nervous with strange software, esp "auto-updating" software, so I'll probably try it on a PC I'm about to reload anyway, just in case.

The chance of me hitting 'install now' on a single page website (no matter how nice the dice image) posted by someone with a single post is ZERO

And I recommend others to give it a miss as well!

Some folks at the WoTC forums have already looked into this: D&D Combat Manager - Wizards Community

Thank you GWL for believing I need an automated tool to play this game. Does this mean a future generation of your stellar program will allow me to play, gain experience and vast amounts of treasure while doing something else (ie. going to a movie with my gaming friends)?

/snarky reply on

Instead of building a program to aid in my hobby (a hobby I enjoy playing), could you devise one that will automatically do my job, plan my career and my retirement while still allowing me to pull a weekly, bi-monthly, monthly or yearly paycheck COMPLETELY FREE?

/snarky reply off

Anyone else of the opinion that giving a program login information for your DDI raises the threat level of ID theft?

Does anyone find basic arithmetic all that taxing?

Does anyone not enjoy rolling of dice?

Your website has a minimalistic noir feel about it. How frugal of you.

**edit: formatted to make it easier to read.

I scanned the file with jotti.org and it found nothing. I then installed the application in a Virtual Machine. It does open to a GUI that has 3 buttons, about, Player Mode, DM Mode, and a place to check for voice on and auto-roll. When clicking DM Mode, nothing seemed to happen. Player mode prompted me to load the .dnd4e file from the character builder. When I did this, the application crashed since I have uninstalled the Windows voice process that was needed. (According to my interpretation of the error report). I did not test on another install with the necessary processes.

Always be careful when downloading files, just because no virus was found doesn't mean the file is benign.

Then again, one of the reasons people were hesitant about the file was the poster's post count being one. Making this post rather meaningless, since this is my first post.

I might test the program tomorrow on a machine it should run on.

I have not tested to see if the software connects to any server other than wizards when doing the DDI verification. As previously mentioned, it could be a prime opportunity for account theft.

It sounds interesting, but this counts as a press release. I'll slide the thread over into the Publisher's forum.

Dean, thanks for running those tests (and congrats for unlurking!) :D

GWllosa, I encourage you to hang around, join the community and provide more information.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't get this to load in characters.

I have tried characters from the new character builder and old and neither of them load in. They cause the program to crash.

Has anyone gotten this to load characters or is it just me?
