As for the mental health and third party creators the creator who asked the question posts with more details. It wasn’t a demand for health insurance. I’ve copied her whole thread in the spoiler block.
Hi. I’m the person who asked this question, and this isn’t entirely accurate. 🧵 I had decided from the moment I received the invitation that I wasn’t going to talk about my attending until after the summit for many reasons my own concerns about my own health, travel and in-person gatherings, the hope story of harassment and abuse of creators in this space, my own desire to have time to collect my thoughts and questions without outside influence or input, and many, many other reasons. I took this opportunity to give feedback to the executives directly seriously. So seriously, in fact, that it’s the first time I’ve traveled or been around any group of people since the beginning of the pandemic. I would NOT have done this if it had been presented as a PR event. One of the major themes in the questions I wrote was about sustainability of this industry for freelance creators, whose health and welfare, both mental and physical, has regularly and substantially been threatened and/or damaged by the consequences of decisions by D&D. Freelancers do not receive health insurance. But more importantly, creators have become a shield for companies, and often are taking the brunt of those decisions, by association. The issue, to me, is that those companies provide digital harassment, tools, and resources, health, insurance, and mental health support, among other benefits to their employees, while providing ZERO support to creators. Even providing resource LISTS to contractors & freelancers, and offering support if a crisis occurs – – if creators are getting death threats, doxxed, etc., BECAUSE of their work with a company, there needs to be SOME support, bc I am seeing firsthand what this is doing to us. I was not asking for health insurance, but Dan tried to say that Wizards’ employees experienced the same thing, and I followed up by pointing out that employees have health insurance and mental health services covered, while freelancers do not. With a company as large as D&D, at the bare minimum, when freelancers are the ones targeted and abused for corporate executive decisions, the least they can do is think about digging into their pockets offering some bare bones mental health and digital protection services for us. We are HEMORRHAGING creators from this industry because we are breaking from the disconnect of low pay, healthcare, overwork, expectations, projection, abuse, fatigue, and burnout. Mostly IMPORTANT marginalized voices, who are likely to have the LEAST access to these services. It needs to change. And that’s what I said. I’m sure I will have other things to say in the coming days and weeks, but I am literally shaking writing this thread. Yesterday was surreal and exhausting and infuriating and exhilarating. Please be kind and respectful and give people grace. They fought HARD and gave their all yesterday for this community and industry. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and I’ll never forget it. And I’m unbelievably proud. /end
