[QUOTE="Ruin Explorer, post: 8983884, member: 18"] No. Sorry. That's just dead wrong. It's been proven wrong time after time after time. Just absolutely wrong. Companies which encourage or do absolutely nothing about abusive behaviour consistently get worse-behaving fans. Companies which attempt to shut down bad behaviour by making it clear they don't think it's cool, they think it's lame and bad, and you suck for doing it get better behaving fans. Again this has been shown repeatedly. And most of the abusive behaviour is from the vigilantism you're encouraging - the "communities policing themselves" - the vast majority of people being very abusive to others on places like Twitter, within communities, are people who feel like they're "policing" that community. Some of the very most toxic behaviour is exactly what you're encouraging. The absolute apex of this might be something like the Stephen Universe community, which was based on around a harmless cartoon aimed at young people, but had a psychotically "self-policing" community, where anyone who said anything that that community didn't like was absolutely psychotically harassed by people feeling very self-righteous. They even went after people who had worked on the show (but weren't the main people). The creators of SU were pretty crap at shutting it down. Whereas other shows aimed at similar audiences also often gained the psychotic, self-righteous "community police"-types, but they did speak out against bad behaviour which completely undermined and confused the self-righteous psychos, some of even left the community because of it (improving the community, to be clear).
