Fantasy fiction based in no Western cultures shouldn't be a taboo by fault of accustations of "cultural appropiation". I say some times it is not only justified but also necessary to learn to respect other cultures. For example a little child used to play with figures of "first nation", the Northamerican indigenous. When this child was older, will be willing to read books about Northamerican natives. Can you understand what I am trying to mean? Can't we enjoy all those Hollywood productions based in the tales of the "1001 nights"? What if that "cultural appropiation" was necessary to stop xenophobia against people from other nations? Now I have got a new question. Let's imagine a player creating virtual miniatures based in the husks and mist monsters from "Fortnite: Save the World" (the original videogame before the batle royal becoming so famous), but also using the last Unreal Editor to can use Fortnite as a VTT. This is allowed by law when it is with no-profit intentions. But Hasbro and Epic Games wouldn't be too happy or confortable with the idea. Or a player creating virtual miniatures and scenery for a campaign based in the old cartoon "Pirates of the Dark Waters", or virtual miniatures based in other cartoon "Wildfire". And even the player goes beyond, using the virtual miniatures and the animation to produce a machinima serie based in a forgotten franchise. But maybe the owners of the IP could use the recovered popularity to sell merchandising products.
