It's a little more complicated than that - some mixed-race people object to removing the word half, because they feel it makes them less to have it taken away. This is not a simple issue. There are mixed-race people on both sides of it in significant numbers. It's been a big subject of discussion of TTRPG Twitter, and frankly the worst behaviour so far has come from two groups: 1) White people who are knee-jerk reactionaries and are mad their "half-X" races being taken away and keen that everyone feel their wrath. 2) White people who are hardline progressives (at least in their own minds), who are keen to scream at any one - definitely including actual mixed-race people - who disagrees that half-X is inherently bad and evil. I hate to "both sides" this, but it's been gross, and coming down hard about it, or making out like it's an absolute that everyone should easily cleave to is making the problem worse. And the way 5E currently implements mixed species is, frankly, as you say, horrific blood quantum bollocks, so that really doesn't help matters. WotC have made their decision and it ain't a good one. I think he might be a Rasta, dude, and white Rastas (or other non-Black Rastas, I met a South Asian Rasta once!) are absolutely subjected, on a routine basis, to "do-gooding" people criticising them for their appearance on the basis of it being "stolen" or "inappropriate for a white person", and attempting to gatekeep their appearance, using exactly the kind of language you were. That might not be what you intended, but I guarantee any white Rasta has had someone come up to them and start that kind of gatekeeping rant.
