It absolutely is if you're talking elements of their body, and you do it online (or worse, IRL), especially you get a gang of people together, either very intentionally or just by deciding to highlight an individual for criticism. We can all laugh at some jerk who got a crappy faux-Maori tattoo on his face ten years ago. But let's be real - he's probably poor, he's probably kind of dim, and he's probably ruined his job prospects. Even if he does tattoo removal, which is a long, hard, painful road - and expensive you're not lucky enough to find a charity to support you in it, his face is going to look weird. So you deciding to get together online and tell him how much he sucks is not helpful, kind, sensible, nor "being an ally". It's purely fishing for clout by harassing an idiot. The same exact goes for harassing white (or other) people with dreads. Are some of them being idiots? Yes, absolutely. But there's no need to actually harass them, especially as again, they tend not to be people who are doing great in their lives, for the most part (there are exceptions). Laugh at the picture, tell your friends not to do it, but don't actually track them down and harass them. For god's sake don't approach them in the street and tell them they suck (something I've seen a guy do one time, an idiot self-righteous guy I knew). Also, every single person I've ever seen get mad about "white people with dreads", like you did - was not a Rasta. Almost all of them white, too. Funny that. And frankly, I'm pretty sure I've done more to help trans people in my life than you ever have, and I am very sure that encouraging people to harass or confront or whatever you want to call it, other people over their bodies is a bad policy. And it definitely encourages transphobes. I've literally seen TERFs use your "appropriation" arguments REPEATEDLY against trans people. It's at the core of the TERF philosophy, even - that "men" (i.e. trans-women) are appropriating women's bodies, roles, spaces and so on. But you get ahead and say that's a legitimate argument. You keep saying that. How about we stick to criticising actually-bad appropriators, like the Rachel Dolezals of the world, who literally claim an ethnic identity they don't have the slightest relation to? Or the countless faux-Native American professors of the US? The problem with Dolezal wasn't that she had her hair in braids or a lot of fake tan. The problem was she was claiming she was actually Black and spoke for Black people. <3
