I can't appreciate how 3E changed the fluff that preceded it because I didn't play anything before 3E. I do like a number of the changes that 4E made (e.g. angels, mytho-narrative cosmos, etc.), but I also can appreciate how 5E attempts to harmonize the innovations of 4E with its precursor editions. But a lot of what you describe in 4E (e.g. half-orcs no longer assume rape) actually stem before 4E. In 3.5's Eberron setting, for example, half-elves are a true-breeding species with their own communities, culture, and identity as opposed to every half-elf being the child of a human and elven parent. The same was true for half-orcs, and orcs even had communities alongside of humans in the Shadow Marches. And it wasn't 4E that helped me come to appreciate gnomes but the Golarion gnomes of Pathfinder, which ran concurrently alongside 4E.</blockquote>
