Since we don't really have an industry standard yet for DMing, so $10/hour may actually be the right value for a non-celebrity DM, but ... I swear this is a running gag in my life, first as freelance copywriter and then a freelance healthcare professional. When someone wants to pay out of their own pocket for someone's skills, that "value" of their work is always $10/hour -- unless your a lawyer or doctor. If corporate client or insurance is footing the bill (i.e. free to said manager) then suddenly rates can easily start at $22/hour and easily go up if that means they secure real talent and expertise. Maybe that number is more based on the buyer's perceived budget than a real assessment of the effort and skill involved? Nothing felt better for me personally than the time I could finally say to someone who made me a $10/hour offer, "Sorry. But to be frank, you can't afford me." Magically, the offer changed, but the damage was done. I don't like to haggle. As a further bit of professional bit of irony. The clients that pay top dollar for me, usually give me implicit trust in my skills and my advice. The guys who get sticker shock over $10-$15/hour are the ones that constantly question if I'm worth it. As a side note, I've always gotten glowing reviews from the people who paid me well at the start. Not so much from the cheapskates.
