D&D in India ?

I have a friend headed to India's capital to work for 3 years. He seems very negative of the prospects of finding a good gaming group there.

Does anyone here have RPG/D&D contacts in India ? Help him keep his D&D addiction ! Or should I give him bad news ?

Gotta say I have had and presently got a lot of Indian colleagues. TBH none of them have been the slightest bit interested in fantasy/sci-fi or gaming. Many of these colleagues don't even play video games and they are from a variety of age groups.

I fear the worst for your friends gaming success. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and I really hope an Indian on these boards proves me wrong.

Errr, Being from India and all, the concept of video games etc. is very popular and a growing trend in India. Harrry Potter has been a huge hit in India, but since there has been no marketing or no concept of role playing as such in India, there is probably a remote chance of finding a game there.
I have had several of my indian friends play D&D with me over time. Since mythos and the fantastic is an integral part of indian culture i would presume it would apppeal to those of the "modern" generation as there is a huge cultural crossover and transition these days.

Best bet - find some Harry Potter fans in India - who knows, maybe you will start a trend....

PS: This BBC news article on DnD has someone from India posting on it:

in india, the concept of recreational gaming doesnt really exist, let alone rpgs or video games.

sorry bro.
I think you're exaggerating here. From the age of 16, which is when I got hold of my own PC, I was seriously into computer games. I have a large circle of friends who were all into computer gaming to varying degrees. I'd say that tabletop gaming is what is literally nonexistent in India. As far as I know, there has been no marketing of D&D or other RPGs in India. Pity, since there's a potential market out there. I've introduced some of my Indian friends to gaming and they took to it like ducks to water.

I think the real issue here is whether, when playing D&D in India, you'd have to be of the Brahmin caste to play a cleric. ;)

Hrm..... that's something to think about. We're going to be there probably for a year or two and we're going to keep publishing. I wonder if there would be a viable market.
