"I think a lot of people who get drawn to this game are loners, but here's a real opportunity to come out of that shell and feel safe about it," said fan Mitch Hamburger, 32.

Great quote, unfortunate name.

From the article said:
"An estimated 25,000 fans in 1,200 stores celebrated the anniversary Saturday," said Charles Ryan, brand manager for role-playing games at Wizards of the Coast, a Renton, Washington, company that owns Dungeons & Dragons.

The northside Chicago Borders Bookstore had about twenty of those people, with three Mad Alchemist games and one pickup FR game.

Wow, I went to CNN before I saw this thread and there it is right on the front page:

"Gamers mark 30 years of Dungeons & Dragons"

I am kinda surprised Fox News doesn't have a headline "Satanists celebrate 30 years of worshiping evil".

Why? Fox often covers sci-fi, fantasy, and other pop culture items in their daily (though very brief) G-Block segment. Fox is alot more geek-friendly than CNN ever was.

National Public Radio did a piece on "30 Years of DnD" last Friday, that included a brief interviews with Adkinson, Gygax and Weiss, as well as an actual DnD group.

Your stereotype of rightists doesn't explain this article in the online version of the leading righist US mag all that well, now does it? The Jack Chick crowd is really, really small.

Maybe it's because Fox loves cheap sensationalism. Right now though, I'd say they're a little too busy with internal damage control to worry about the D&D culture in any way.

On the positive side of the things, the 30th anniversary is generating a lot of good news coverage...more than I expected. If you think about, the day could have passed without a peep from the press.

I think that coverage (from any news org) is good for the game. Perhaps it will even generate new or renewed interest in the game. One can only hope.
