D&D Lore repository

i've been wondering something. does anyone know if there is a D&D lore repository somewhere on the internet?

here, let me give you an example of what i'm talking about. this site contains a ridiculous amount of lore on obscure Marvel Comics characters: http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/appchar.htm the site is meticulously ordered and researched, so much so that the people at Marvel actually hired the guy to work on the company's character encyclopedias!

what i'm wondering is, is there something like that for all the D&D lore out there? you know, a page that collects all the tidbits about characters, locations, artifacts, etc, and puts it into a useable index form both as a reference for DMs and designers alike?

and if there isn't, then why not?

One could hope that the DI and its attendent wiki will become this.

It would be specially cool to have the history of each of the monsters in the game. How did they differ from edition to edition? In what module did they first appear? That sort of thing.

While I can't volunteer to host it or set it up, I'd gladly contribute.

It would give me an outlet for all the stuff I add to Wikipedia that gets the "fancruft" label and roundly dismissed.
