In survival mode, yeah - there are various creatures that can harm you. Some are nocturnal (and killed by sun), some (spiders) are aggressive only by night, some can threaten you anywhere (damn creepers!). It's essentially a sandbox meets Lego meets Engineering toys. Gathering resources and having a shelter from dangers is essential. To gather some resources you need to either have special tools (ie - to mine stone, you need a pick, even wooden will do. To mine metal, you need at least stone pick, to gather redstone - at least a metal one (redstone can be used to make simple electronic mechanisms)). The tools wear out, so you don't want to overkill. Especially, since many resources are scarce or difficult to get. If you run around with all metal tools, you'll have more problems to get enough to build a train-track. And if you get killed... Well, they'll still be where you were slain, but you'd have to go all the way back there (assuming you remember the way), and face what you've already lost to. As with Lego, a lot of people play it in different ways. But the main I've seen are: - building some kind of structure/city - "Dwarf-mode": you dig and gather resources, build often complicated train infrastructure, and at some point you'll "dig too deep" and face lots of hostile mobs. On surface it's a lot easier - during day you have to worry only about creepers. But underground everything is hostile, all the time. But I'm not giving it it's justice. It's free to test it, so just go to minecraft site and try it yourself. You might want to explore crafting recipes yourself, or use aid of Minepedia.
