Maybe that's not as big a problem here, since 30 goblin or kobold minis can be somewhat useful in a game. Also if the sets aren't quite as big as some CCG sets, people won't need to buy so much crap (though I'm sure WotC's marketing department would disagree, profit margins and all that). I would also be irritated if comic shops and the like marked up rare minis to like $100 each or some crap, like they did with Magic cards. No plastic mini is worth that much, hell, none would be worth even $20 (IMO).
I generally didn't like the old metal minis WotC put out for D&D. It was kind of a style issue. I prefer Reaper minis myself. They rock. I haven't personally seen these minis. But from I'm reading here, they basically applied a M:tG marketing strategy to the minis. Sounds like you get a box that has a bunch of cheaply made plastic minis that are randomly sorted. I suppose they might have a use for my game. I probably wouldn't buy it for PC minis, or stuff like the BBEG, but I they sound useful for cannon fodder. Who cares if they're pained crappy? I never waste time on details for cannon fodder. And of course, the possibility of getting a mini for a unique sort of D&D monster I wouldn't be able to get elsewhere is sort of a plus. I'm not really thrilled at the prospect of mini rarity. One reason I turned my back on CCGs (Collectible Crack for Gamers :) ) was the totally horrible distribution. You'd buy hundreds of booster to get one copy of an overhyped rare card and end up with 20 or 30 copies of a really crappy card that totally sucked. They were a huge waste of money.
