he was on radio (starting around 1979)

and on TV (starting around 1980)

Hmmm...don't remember him. But where I grew up, you'd never have heard a D&D commercial on the radio, that's for sure. Remember the little ads for Hostess Fruit Pies they'd drop into comic books? The ones that looked like little comic book pages featuring a superhero beating the bad guys by giving them apple pies? I remember one for D&D. The wizard shouts "Dimension Door!" and they escape to safety while the orcs eat pies.
