When you sit down to a table and ask what edition you are playing, you now do NOT have a clear answer what PHB to use... and bringing a 2014 half elf bard with a 2014 background feature to a table only useing the 2024 PHB is going to cause issues... like wise bringing a 2024 fighter to the 2014 table (heaven forbid the ranger or monk) is going to just look like cheating.I don't care if you call your new version of the game an edition change (although that is what we always have since 2e) but it is at least a new version that needs clarification on what rule set you are using BEFORE you even get to optional rules and house rules.I knew people back in the day that call Spells and Powers and combat and tactics 3rd edition... although when 3e came out they REFUSED to play what they called "THe magic the gathering edition" so there is that...Like 3e/3.5 you will (I promise) find people still useing the 2014 rules for a while... but those tables will be harder and harder to find. You will forever find some (you caa still find 1e tables...just few and far between) but yeah, this is a new version and the community will move on and need a way for a while to differentiate them... and in the end 5e isn't the final name it will have, after a year or 3 it will just being D&D, with the 2014 books needing the "at this table we play this older version/edition"</blockquote>
