Yes, they will most likely sell a lot more on Amazon. But wouldn't it also be helpful to put that red banner on the front cover of the actual book? For clarity sake? I know all of us here know the distinction but there will be many out there who don't. Again - newbies, parents, non-gamers, etc. who walk into a hobby store, or even Barnes & Noble. There will B&N stores that will have some of the old PHB on the shelves for awhile. What Wizards has done enough of is to make sure they didn't hurt their sales of the old books when they announced this 2 years ago or so and try to convince everyone it's not a new edition. I often see folks in D&D groups that are still confused about the books, if it's a new edition or not. And I really don't think Hasbro gives a flip about 3PP, hence what they tried to do to with the OGL. If they made significant changes to everything - character creation, classes, combat, spells, etc. then if feels like a new edition to me. If the reviewer with 15+ years as a professional game designer thinks it's a new edition his opinion will carry more weight with me over others who are not. Also, think of this - a player wants to use stuff from the old PHB but the DM says "Sorry, but we are only using the 2024 rules for this new campaign/one shot/whatever." Backward compatibility does no good here.
