Spelling in the English language is so broken. Words that used to be spelled properly were changed, making our language confusing beyond reason. When I read "childe" in a very old book, I thought THAT'S the way it should be spelled. child should be said like chilled. I think because our language is FILLED with exceptions to every rule, it encourages fantasy creators to use weird cool spellings with pronunciations no one is certain of. Even from the list above, I scratched my head at some. From Frank Mentzer article in Dragon #93 (Jan. 1985) Augury "AG ur ree" ? AG as in BAG? So is that not the English word, or is AG a poorly chosen syllable for clear pronunciation. AWG ur ree, AWG as in DOG. I've never seen or heard another pronunciation. Especially back in pre-Internet (1985) verbal sources, where you could here the correct way, weren't easily available. So these lists may have personally mispronounced words, codified in writing. And made-up words are just a free-for-all. Anhkheg (M): ANK-eg. ANK as in BANK? Then why bother adding a silent "h"? ONK-eg is how I've always mispronounced that. How much easier would it be if English was spelled the way it sounded using CONSISTENT rules. Spelling words the way Sesame Street teaches. +"ow" bow, cow, how, now, pow, vow, wow (double the -w = vowwing) "vowing" is an exception in the real language +"owe" bowe, lowe, mowe, rowe, sowe, towe (replace the -e with -ing = towing) which could also work for fowe, howe, & nowe (nowne) G is always guh - gun, gunk J is always juh - jail, jiant, jigantic, junk IE is eye - Lie, Lier, Pie, Bie(which word is that?!) and just use EE since that is consistent - Sheeld, Yeeld, Breef EI is ay - Deity Spell it Litch or Lick, not Lich - then we'd all nowe the right way. One day I couldn't remember how I was supposed to pronounce a name I created. I didn't like any of the ways I thought to say it. After that, I started changing the spelling of my creations to use simpler, more consistently pronounced, or phonetic spellings. No more cool spellings with extra apostrophes, and an abundance of x's and z's. LOL
