Before heading out west, Richter worked with the Annoyance Theatre here in Chicago, a group that builds their shows through improv. I'd venture a guess that a lot of people who have been involved in improv, here and elsewhere, have some roots around the gaming table. :) We didn't have a D&D club at our high school (back in the seventies) but we had a local club at a Park District Field House where I first learned to play (though this was still a bit before high school). I remember walking in one week (we used to play regular wargames there) to find that some folks were gathered around a table and rolling large amounts of dice. One fellow, Big Bill Hudson, was running two characters with a large retinue of followers (some of which were being run by other players). His fighter named Thor (wielding the obligatory returning hammer) was pounding some monster or other while his hobbit named Loki was sneaking around behind to try and steal something. Very munchkin, very fun. That was my first time seeing the game and I sat right down and starting trying to make a character to join them. :)
