Even when I started in the Dark Ages of 2e, that felt an anathema to why I moved to table-top RPGs. I wanted to tell the same great stories that CRPGS like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior were, but with my own character as the protagonist. The whole "randomly determine who you are, run them for as far as you can, crash them spectacularly and do it all again" style of play held no appeal. To me, that was the difference between playing Final Fantasy and playing Gauntlet. One of those I remember for the emotional story, the other for making it all the way to level 42. As I am now older and my time playing RPGs is limited to a few hours per month (if that), I absolutely do not want to waste my time playing anything I don't want to. While deaths do happen, the greater goal is watching a PC grow, mature, and affect and be affected by the narrative playing on around him. I simply do not have the time nor patience to let the dice tell me what I can and can't play. I don't begrudge those who do like that style, but I'm absolutely glad WotC creates rules and material that fits my playstyle.
