Back in the old days, after moving to a new town when I was 15, someone invited me, the new kid in the apartment complex, to play in a 2E game. I rolled a fighter with 18/00 in front of everyone. It was amazing. Big high. In the very first fight, the new DM determined that the goblin ambushers saw my character as the strongest, and they were therefore targeted by all the goblin arrows, which led to the death of my new fighter in the first round. I never even got to make an attack. I hadn't realized that a couple of the other players resented my good roll and I got laughed at. I was too young and vulnerable at the time to not take offense at the mockery. I felt targeted and unwelcome and I didn't go back to that group.That was the first time I encountered a problem with players rolling their ability scores in ways that made the PCs not balanced to each other.I like rolling, though. So these days when I DM, I have everyone roll an array, and anyone can use anyone else's rolled array. Usually, there is a clearly best array from the lot, so everyone picks that one and the PCs are balanced to each other.</blockquote>
